Exclusively travels back to the future

The glitz and glamour of the Roaring 1920s will be revisited as we enter a new decade, according to trend analysts Scarlet Opus, which curated the Trend Hub a the recent Exclusively Shows (June 11-12, Islington BDC). The 20s influence was compassed by The Traveller trend, with a Christmas table display incorporating exhibitors’ products in the Trend Hub. The Traveller trend was one of the four trends highlighted in the popular daily Trend Talks and Trend Tours.

Phil Pond, a director of Scarlet Opus acknowledged: “We will be letting go of the past decade and moving into times where things are more ordered, controlled and glamorous, even if it is only surface deep.”

He continued: “We predict that it will be a very sumptuous, glitzy Christmas with beautiful formal table settings. In tableware for example, glassware will be dipped and sprayed with brass making it look very glamorous. There will also be lots of Gatsby style 1920’sNew Year’s Eve parties.”

A dark, inky indigo blue will be the trend’s stand out colour, with grey continuing to be dominant. However, there will also be a resurgence of brown, which, along with orange, will be hitting the catwalks in the Spring. Dark wood and marble will also be on trend for the kitchen and dining room.

Scarlet Opus’ tour leaders, Victoria Redshaw and Laura Greenwood highlighted the return of fine dining, reflected in the opening of many new restaurants around the globe, “with a refreshing sense of occasion; creating the feeling that these are special dining experiences that make eating out feel like an event again.”

They explained: “The motivation for the reinvention of fine dining links to the Experience Economy; essentially fine dining is new and novel to many Millennials for whom casual dining is the norm and they are now craving new dining experiences as a form of escapism and adventure.”

Add in the economic impact of Brexit, and this restaurant trend will influence home dining as consumers eat out less, instead recreating a special dining experience to share with friends around their own dining tables.

Beautifully laid tables will incorporate exquisite glassware, table linen, statement cutlery and serveware, as well as stylish tableware.

The Trend Tour picked Exclusively Housewares exhibitor, The Wentworth Tableware Company (from Candlelight Products) to showcase the perfect tableware for luxurious table settings – particularly its Art Deco Luxe collection. “Featuring a balanced mix of complimentary repeating geometric patterns, fan motif and classic fish scale/wave patterns, it is immediately recognisable as being Art Deco-inspired–perfect timing as we enter the2020’s next year,” said Victoria and Laura.

They added: “The gold detailing brings high shine back to table schemes after years of matte surface finishes dominating the trends. Get ready for gloss to trend-up!”

However, the trend does not advocate keeping a dinner service’ for best’ but: “Essentially the trend direction moves towards creating special moments every day; finding simple ways in which we can reward and comfort ourselves and our loved ones,” the Trend Tour leaders concluded.
