Meat roasting in the oven tops poll for things that make a house feel homely

A new survey has revealed the top things which turn a house into a home, with 53% citing the smell of meat roasting as the top of the list.

The research, by kitchen towel brand, Plenty, surveyed 1,500 adults and found that bacon sizzling in a pan came in at number five, with 35% of the vote, while fresh linen on the bed (51%) and a well-stocked fridge (45%) are all top signs that a house is a home.

A kettle boiling (32%), the smell of a cake baking in the oven (25%), along with freshly cut flowers (32%), framed family photos (44%) and comfy throws (29%), also rated highly.

The research also found that 70% agree that for a house to feel like a home it should feel relaxed and lived in rather than being super clean and tidy, with 48% saying they are tired of social media images of insta-perfect houses with no mess.

42% admitted that while their home may not always look clean and tidy, they wouldn’t have it any other way.
