Brits name their all-time top dishes

The research, by insights agency, Perspectus Global, revealed that the top spot was taken by Friday night favourite, fish and chips, with a huge 58% of the vote, with roast beef with Yorkshire pudding coming in a close second with 42% and the full English at third place with 40%.

Classics such as trifle, ham, egg and chips, and Victoria sponge, also made the top 25, as did steak and kidney pudding and jam roly-poly.

As many as 32% of Gen Z and millennials surveyed said they have been learning how to make low cost, traditional British meals, due to the cost of living crisis.

English versions of Indian dishes such as chicken tikka masala and chicken korma also made the cut.

Ellie Glason, md of Perspectus Global, said: “Our research suggests that we are seeing a definite resurgence in the popularity of classic British foods and recipes.

“In fact data suggests that millennials and Gen Z are perhaps keeping costs down by learning to cook some of the traditional recipes dating back to their grandparents’ generation, including jam roly-poly, toad in the hole, trifle and Welsh rarebit.”
