BIRA: Shaping the future of independent retail at BIRA’s 125th anniversary conference

Andrew Goodacre, ceo of BIRA, outlines the plans for the association’s 125th anniversary conference.

As CEO of the British Independent Retailers Association (Bira), I’m thrilled to open the invites to our landmark conference celebrating 125 years of supporting independent retailers across the UK. This event serves as a crucial platform for our sector to gain insights, share experiences, and prepare for the future of retail.

Our carefully curated agenda addresses the most pressing issues facing independent retailers today. From sustainability and technology to the changing face of our high streets, we’ve brought together industry experts, government representatives, and successful retailers to share their knowledge and experiences.

The day will begin with my update on BIRA’s current position and future strategy, including details on membership benefits and our advocacy efforts. This will set the stage for a day filled with valuable insights and practical advice.

We are honoured to have Wayne Hemingway MBE joining us to provide an overview of independent retail, place development, and sustainability. Wayne’s expertise in design and town centre development will offer valuable insights into creating attractive shop floors and implementing successful initiatives. His session will be packed with case studies and practical resources you can apply to your own business.

A highlight of the conference will be our panel discussion with a Government Minister on key issues affecting independent retailers. I’ll be chairing this session, joined by Bira President John Jones from Phillip Morris and LPAC Chairman Surinder Josan from All Seasons DIY. We’ll explore opportunities across various sectors, from hardware and fashion to electrical and cycling.

After lunch, we’ll turn our attention to the future of our high streets. Ojay Macdonald, CEO of the Association of Town Centre Managers, will share key insights into the impact of good management on high streets and what independent retailers can do to help create thriving communities. This will be followed by a panel discussion hosted by Wayne Hemingway, addressing your most pressing questions about place development.

In today’s digital age, technology and AI are reshaping retail. Our session with experts from Google and Global Payments will demystify these tools, showing how smaller retailers can leverage them to compete with larger chains. We’ll focus on practical applications that can help grow your business, proving that technology can be a positive force when used effectively.

Sustainability is no longer optional in retail. Victoria Robertshaw, owner of Green Street, will lead a session on embracing sustainability and the circular economy. With recent research showing that 76% of consumers are trying to be more sustainable and 57% are influenced by businesses with strong sustainability credentials, this session will demonstrate how sustainability can be an opportunity rather than a cost for your business.

Throughout the day, there will be ample networking opportunities during our refreshment breaks and lunch hour. These moments are invaluable for connecting with fellow retailers, sharing experiences, and potentially forming new business relationships.

This conference is designed for independent retail store owners and managers, retail workers, start-up entrepreneurs, product suppliers and service providers, and investors. If you’re involved in or interested in the world of independent retail, this event is tailored for you.

As we celebrate 125 years of Bira, we’re not just looking back at our proud history. We’re equipping you with the knowledge and connections you need to thrive in an ever-changing retail environment. This conference is an investment in your business and in the future of independent retail in the UK.

I encourage you to join us for this historic event taking place on Wednesday, 16 October, from 10am to 4pm at One Great George Street, London. Together, let’s celebrate our past, tackle our present challenges, and shape a bright future for independent retail. Book your place now and be part of this momentous occasion. I look forward to seeing you there and hearing your perspectives on the future of our industry.
