Joseph Joseph research finds link between clutter and stress

New research conducted by Joseph Joseph, in partnership with Opinium, reveals that 65% of Brits report that cluttered homes exacerbate stress and anxiety.

With nearly five years of working from home reshaping daily routines, the demand for functional and organised spaces has become more crucial than ever. The emotional toll of disorganised spaces is significant, with 84% of Brits reporting negative feelings toward clutter, describing it as uncomfortable, stressful and overwhelming.

On the other hand, clean and organised environments inspire calm, contentment, happiness and control. Two-thirds (65%) agree that a messy home intensifies pre-existing stress and anxiety, while almost half (46%) say clutter negatively impacts their relationships.

This connection is particularly pronounced among younger generations, with 74% of 18-34-year-olds experiencing heightened stress and anxiety due to clutter, compared to 48% of those aged 55 and over.

Furthermore, the need for organised living spaces is growing, as 40% of those working from home state they require more organisation than before.

The research also highlights how tidy spaces improve focus and productivity. 72% of respondents agree that maintaining a clean and organised home enhances their ability to focus, a sentiment echoed by 81% of 18-34 year-olds, compared to 65% of those aged 55 and over. However, the act of organising itself can feel overwhelming, with 36% admitting it creates anxiety.

“Our homes have evolved into more than just living spaces – they are now offices, schools and sanctuaries. This shift highlights the importance of smart organisation, as clutter affects not only our surroundings but also our mental wellbeing, focus and even relationships.

“At Joseph Joseph, we’re dedicated to creating innovative solutions that reduce stress, promote wellbeing, and bring calm to the chaos, making everyday life easier and more organised,” commented Richard and Antony Joseph, founders of Joseph Joseph.
