Potters aims for zero waste lunches

Potters Cookshop, Hockley – one of the six finalists for the Excellence in Retailer Initiative Award 2019 – is working with local primary school, Plumberow Academy to reduce waste in pupils’ packed lunches.

Tom Carter, director at Potters explains: “We will offer all the mums or dads 25% off any sustainable products to cut any unnecessary waste in their lunchboxes. The school has over 600 pupils so this is quite an offering!”

He adds: “We are hoping to work with more schools when term time starts again but we are working very closely with Plumberow to make them the first school with zero waste in the school lunches next term!”

The children at Plumberow brought their school term to a close with an inspirational assembly on sustainable products led by pupils themselves. Two ‘eco warriors’ from Plumberow had recently visited Potters Cookshop to help sell such products to customers.

In the school assembly, the pupils highlighted a variety of waste-reducing products including beeswax wraps, Dexam’s bamboo cups and paper straws, Stasher silicone bags, Built drinks bottles, Dexam’s vegetable mesh bags and Lock ‘n’ Lock’s Eco range.

Having attended the assembly to support the local ‘eco warriors’, Tom reflects that the children “were amazing!”

* Potters Cookshop is an Excellence in Retailer Initiative finalist for its Community Eco Warriors, which includes its work with Plumberow Academy and the window that highlighted plastic waste in the ocean earlier this year. Customers contributed to some 1000 bottles that were used to create a whale’s tail.
