Trump’s out, cooking’s in

With the housewares sector seeing heightened demand for home cooking supplies, there is new evidence that the nation’s passion for cooking is here to stay. In 2020 there was a 40% increase in food and drink digital magazine readership, compared to the previous year, according to Readly (the digital consumer magazine subscription app).

Moreover, cooking is the top hobby that consumers want to read about in 2021 – 38% in a survey of over 2,000 adults. One in four consumers intend to read more this year, and another 38% want to read about how they can eat more healthily.

When asked what they would like to read less about in 2021, the survey’s participants put Donald Trump at the top of the list. The outgoing president was followed by the Kardashian-Jenners, who were followed by reality tv stars from Love Island and TOWIE.

Highlighting the current importance of home cooking, Ranj Begley, UK managing director and chief content officer at Readly reflected: The magazines and topics we read reveal the passions and interests taking hold of the nation.”

Top: Cooking is a favourite topic for digital magazine readers.
